Building Permit System Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a PIN to use?

If you are the general contractor or the owner/builder, ask for the PIN when you pick up your permit. You may also call the Permitting Desk at 239-213-5020 and ask for your PIN. Please have the permit number available when you call.

If you are a subcontractor, you can get the PIN from your general contractor. PINs are issued to the general contractors only, not subcontractors.

Why doesn't my PIN work?

The number one reason for a PIN not working is you are using the wrong PIN. Each permit has a unique PIN, so a PIN from one permit will not work on other permits you may have. If you are sure you have the right permit, call the Permitting Desk at 239-213-5020 and verify that you have the correct PIN.

Can I apply for a permit online?

Not at this time. You will find the permit application forms available online but you must still bring in the application, along with the required plans and documentation, for processing.

I applied for my permit last week, when will I get it?

Permit applications are normally processed within a few days at most, in the order they are received. Some applications need further review, such as a permit for a dock requiring a Natural Resources review, and those may take longer. If you want to know where your permit application is in the process and it's been a few business days since you applied, simply call the Permitting Desk at 239-213-5020 and ask.

Can I schedule inspections from my cell phone?

Sure, you can schedule inspections, as well as check the results from any touch-tone phone using our Interactive Voice Response system.

I failed my inspection, now what do I do?

You need to correct whatever conditions caused the failure. You may find a list of failed inspection codes online, and you may call the Building and Zoning department at 239-213-5020 to talk to the inspector for a more specific reason. Inspectors are usually in the field and may not be available until later in the afternoon to return your call. It's always advisable to ask the inspector why the inspection failed at the time of the inspection, our inspectors are happy to point out necessary corrections for a re-inspection.
